What is the Athlete Academy?

The Athlete Academy is an athletic development program designed to improve sport-specific qualities for youth and adult athletes from the Darling Downs region.

What does the Athlete Academy aim to do?

Our aim at the Fit Lab and the Athlete Academy is to prepare you to compete at the highest level, mitigate injury risk and fall in love with training in the weight room.

Our 5+ year long athletic development program is designed to develop competency in main movement patterns, build strength and power in these movement patterns and prepare you to seamlessly transition into sporting life beyond the Athlete Academy i.e. professional sporting clubs, overseas university/colleges, etc.

An Overview of the Athlete Academy Structure:

We have three main streams within the Athlete Academy: Foundations, Emerging & Elite.

Foundations is aimed at athletes who haven’t trained in a gym before and are just starting out, or who have had trained consistently for less than 1 year.

Emerging is aimed at athletes with training experince, and can be challenged beyond the Foundations level. Athletes usually last 2 years in this program with each exercise building from the previous training block.

Elite is for athletes who have a few years experience training in a gym and can be pushed in exercises and movements that will increase their movement competency.Only a handful of athletes are progressed to this program each year, and are picked based on their training consistency, attitude and competency within the weight room.

Athlete Academy FAQ

How Many Days A Week Can I Train?

Minimum 1x per week, and maximum 3x times per week.

Please refer to the HPU timetable for training times, otherwise chat to our Strength and Conditioning staff to discuss days and times that suit you best.

How Do I Get Allocated Into A Group?

We allocate athletes into an appropriate group based on age, previous experience training in a gym and level of competency in main movement patterns.

Do I Need To Have A Meeting Before I Can Start?

Although not compulsory, we often meet with, athletes and parents and children prior to their first session. We can take you on a tour of the facility; answer any questions you may have and meet the Athlete Academy team.

If you are thinking of joining the Athlete Academy, please contact us to have a chat over the phone, organise a tour or chat with one of our Strength and Conditioning Coaches.

My Child Competes At A State/National Level. Why Are They Doing The Same Program As Someone Who Isn't?

Just like when you start in a new sport, it takes time to become good at it. It helps to think of weight room training as a new sport in itself – although you may be competing at a high level in your chosen sport/s outside of the weight room, this doesn’t mean this automatically transfers across.

Our goal is to spend time developing competency in these movements initially, before increasing the complexity to more challenging movements. The program is designed to ensure you get the most out of your training every session.

How Much Does It Cost To Join The Athlete Academy?

The cost for an athlete is $35 per week. You can choose to setup a weekly direct debit, or pay it all in a lump sum for a 10 week period during the school term.

Please contact us if you have questions about our options.

How Long Do The Sessions Last For?

Each session lasts for up to 1 hour. You can start the program anytime between 3:30PM and 4:00PM in the afternoon with the program finishing at 5:00PM.

Please keep in mind that we play games at the start of each afternoon program at 3:30PM only.

What Times Can I Train At?

Every afternoon from Monday to Friday from 3:30PM – 5:00PM. In the mornings, there are available times from 5:30AM – 6:30AM on Tuesday and Thursday and 6:30AM – 8:00AM on Friday mornings.
